Acrylic and oil on canvas, 34" x 56"
As a first-generation immigrant from India, the traditional foods I grew up with hold a special place. Despite being labor-intensive and requiring skill, traditional foods that were a regular before, are reserved for special occasions now. Immigration brought about significant changes in my life, including food, values, and personal identity. The relationship dynamic between my mother and I is no exception, as we navigate the complexities of adapting to new cultural norms while reminiscing about the wistful past.
Acrylic and oil on canvas, 30" x 30"
This self-portrait draws on the artist's experience as a Bengali Indian bride on her wedding, a day often romanticized as the happiest day of a woman's life. However, the artist's poignant depiction invites viewers to examine the deeply entrenched patriarchal customs that reinforce and perpetuate gender inequality.
