Acrylic and oil on canvas, 50"x32"
April 2021 - the devastating covid second wave caught everyone unawares in India. Among the many who had it hardest were the elderly, including my septuagenarian mother in Kolkata, India. She had already spent the previous year in isolation for the most part - away from family, in never ending lockdowns. I sensed the emotional toll covid had taken on her and the shadows that still lingered from that time. At the same time I saw the resilience and strength that made her a fighter and a covid survivor today.
Oil on canvas panel, 36"x24"
An indigenous woman from Jharkhand, India stands custodian and protector of the sal tree forests that her previous generations have grown up with.
Oil on canvas panel, 24"x36"
কৃষ্ণ চূড়া (krishna chura in bengali), गुलमोहर (gulmohar in hindi), royal poinciana, Delonix Regia (scientific name). It's a flower that reminds me of home in India that was once the only home I knew. For 3-4 weeks every year in early summer it mesmerizes with its verdant green, luscious red, the highlights of white with specks of yellow and red. Nature has always known best which colors to paint with.
